Free Background Checks: Do They Exist?

There may come a time when you need to check up on a person to verify that they are who they say they are. Also known as a background check, this type of investigation involves looking up official and commercial records associated with the person in question. The first place most people turn to start their search is online, because it is a common misconception that some sites offer background checks for free. Hence, if you are wondering if free checks exist online, the answer is "No".

Why? The simple reason is the information you are searching for is not easily obtainable, because much of it is considered to be public record, such as criminal records, birth certificates, immigration records, etc. Yes, for the most part public records are available for free, but how you obtain these documents and details is rarely free or charge. Therefore, regardless of the method you choose for your background check, you can expect a certain cost, and in many cases, a long search time.

Basically, what you will discover, if you attempt a background check online, is that there are a number of sites that have developed databases filled with millions of public details, records, websites and other sources, which can assist you on your quest to learn the truth about a questionable individual. That said, the creation and consistent updating of organized and comprehensive databases takes plenty of time, money and effort. Thus, those who would like access to such a directory are essentially charged a convenience fee.

However, if you still want to make an attempt at finding the information you seek for free online, you can try a search engine, such as Google. For starters, you will require the full name (first and last name) of the person you are searching, but this information will not be enough. You will also need to use other effective keywords in addition to the name for more refined and useful results. For instance, try linking the name with the state and/or city the person resides in (I.E. "John Smith"+California). The search engine will then look for sites that contain the exact name and the state. This will likely provide you with social networking sites, personal or business webpages, phone book results, etc.

Nonetheless, regardless of what information you may attain through a search engine, for effective results that will give you the answers you want, you will quickly discover that only a fee-based background check will adequately meet your needs. With the Internet, you don't have to worry about contacting a court, law enforcement officials, a government agency, or hiring a private investigator. Thus, conducting a background lookup online is the fastest, easiest, and most cost-effective way to get the job done.
